Elio Sandri
Named Cascina Disa, Elio Sandri is the Italian producer with vineyards nestled between Rocche di Castiglione and Gabutti in Serralunga. Trapping the day's early warmth, the vineyards of Elio Sandri produce fruit that is both ripe and exuberant as well as terrifically transparent and soil driven. Cascina Disa is a true winery and home in one, surrounded and hidden even by lush vineyards. These vineyards, benefiting from terrific eastern and southern exposures, have soils, grayish loams with veins of sand that become painfully obvious in the fall, that draw as much from Castiglione as they do from Serralunga, though truth be known they are very much Perno soils.

Farmed lovingly, in a truly minimally interventionist style, these vineyards, planted roughly between 300 and 350 meters above sea level, only account for part of the brilliance of Elio Sandri wines. There is of course the winemaking as well. Adhering to a similar non-interventionist tact in the cellar, Elio has quietly been producing wines that should be recognized as among the region's best. Seriously, these wines can compete with any being produced in the Langhe, and an argument can be made, a very strong argument in fact, that his Dolcetto and Barbera are not only screaming value, but truly among the world’s finest expressions of these varieties.
Located in the sub region east of the Tanaro river, in the province of Piedmont, Italy, the wine region of Langhe is home to rolling hills, winding roads, and of course, world renowned vineyards. The name ‘Langhe’ translates to long low-lying hills in Italian. Besides wine, this area is also known for white truffles, hazelnuts, chocolate and cheese.

Some of the most prestigious and indeed expensive wines in Italy such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Dogliani and Asti are produced here along with the wines that are made with more relaxed production restriction; the Langhe DOC. The Langhe DOC allows winemakers to experiment with different techniques that would not be licensed under other DOCs. In the words of Angelo Fornara, a sommelier from this area, “Each vineyard cru is like a new human being. It has its own identifiable characteristics that define it just like you and me.”

The development of the skin and aroma of the grapes are aided by the extreme differences in the temperatures during the day and night of this area, and the soils which are mixed with marl or calcium carbonate, which produce a wide variety of wines. Arneis, Nascetta, Favorita, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are some of the white grapes grown in this area, and Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, Freisa, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are a few of the reds grown here.

It seems to me, that 2015 is quite a juicy and fruity vintage, not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s likely especially positive at the Langhe Neb level, or so it seems so far. This wine responds to a good amount of time sitting in glass (or if you’re trying it at home, a decanter), which builds up aromatic complexity and palate weight. Juicy cherry, raspberry, spice and almonds, some aniseed and flowers come up with air. Medium bodied, gentle rasp of emery tannin, fresh red fruits, nuts and pepper, clean acidity and a solid finish. It’s kind of Monforte light, if you like, and makes for a very typical, and good, glass of Nebbiolo. It will be better again with a few more years under its belt.
