Tasting Notes

Colour Dark Red
Nose The Grosset Gaia 2015 has a gently aromatic brooding quality, ironstone, briar, wild bramble and dark plum flavours that are complex and intense with underlying power.
Palate This is a savoury red that intrigues before offering plush velvety texture, held in check by ultra-fine tannins that are gently assertive at present. The finish features schisty minerality, is extra dry and long lasting.

Notes This 26th release of Grosset Gaia is one of the smallest in volume due to the Gaia Vineyard rejuvenation program. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from a rocky, isolated, wind-swept two hectare block close planted by Grosset in 1986.

Situated in the Mid North of South Australia, approximately 120 km north of Adelaide is one of Australia's oldest wine regions the Clare Valley. The area is broken up into three sub-regions, the Polish Hill River region to the east, the Central Clare Valley, and the Skillogalee Valley to the west.

Often associated with some of Australia's finest Riesling the cool climate and differing terroirs have paved the way for exciting and diverse wines over a plethora of varietals resulting in wines of pure expression and great length. Home to some of Australia's most iconic wineries - cult producers like Wendouree, to Australian icons such as Kilikanoon and boutique producers like Atlas, the Clare Valley is definitely an area to keep an eye on for exciting and ever evolving wines.

(2013 vintage) Magnificently elegant and fragrant, a Gaia of the highest order, of wonderfully evocative grace and understated endurance. It captures its cool, high site with eloquence, presenting a pronounced violet fragrance that hovers over a core of blackcurrant fruit. In sheer line and length, one of the greatest Clare reds of the modern era.

Sat down to a glass or two of this with a meal and it performed handsomely. Sat down with it at the tasting bench and it seemed good, but shy of its performance at the dining table. You’d have to say that’s an argument in its favour. It’s dry and dusty with curranty, briary fruit, refreshing acidity, hints of florals, and a fine, elongated finish. Beautifully structured; that bone China feel. Fennel notes whisper through the aftertaste. It’s pretty much guaranteed to mature well.
