For the first of our Meet the Maker sessions of the year, we're honoured to be joined by Kim and Tennille Chalmers from Chalmers wines in Victoria. While the Chalmers viticultural story goes back to the late 1970s with grape growing and vine propagation, it was only in the early 2000s they began to produce their own wine. Beginning with the Murray Darling Collection in 2003 they experimented with many different varieties of French, Spanish and Italian origin in an effort to find grapes that were capable of producing optimum quality in warmer, drier growing conditions. After a few vintages, the focus sharpened on Italian varieties, of which they had more than 30 in the vineyard, and they put their name on the label to create Chalmers wines. The tasting will focus on these incredible 'Aussie made Italians' made by the Chalmers family paired with their original Italian counterparts for context, to understand why these varieties work so well here in Australia. Wines on tasting will be: Chalmers 'Felicitas' Sparkling 2018 Chalmers Vermentino 2017 Tenuta Roccaccia 'Solechiaro' Vermentino - Tuscany, Italy 2017 Chalmers Greco 2017 Chalmers Fiano 2015 Antonio Caggiano 'Bechar' Fiano di Avellino - Campania, Italy 2018 Chalmers Nero d'Avola 2016 Borgo Selene Nero D'avola Sicilia 2013 Chalmers Aglianico 2013 Madonna delle Grazie 'Liscone' Aglianico del Vulture - Basilicata, Italy 2014 Chalmers Sagrantino 2014 Antonelli 'Contrario' Sagrantino- Umbria, Italy And more to be announced...
